A Cloud of Women: Tribute to Our Mothers
I dedicate this book to my mother, Valerie Frances Proctor, extraordinary educator, counselor, wife, mother and human being, who taught me that "without the love of books, the richest man is poor." She is, thankfully, in this present cloud of women and still urges me on.
~Diane Proctor Reeder
To my mother, Valentine Hill, and my grandmother, Mary Johnson, who taught me to believe that God moves through the lives of women who trust Him. And to the mothers who prayed for me before I was born because God moved through them too.
~Rev. Dr. Georgia A. Hill
Based on the Play, A Cloud of Women
A Cloud of Women is based on the play of the same name. It debuted at Mt. Lebanon-Strathmoor Church in 1996, and then was expanded and produced at Plymouth United Church of Christ in Detroit, Michigan. It went on to be featured at the former Marygrove College in Detroit under brilliant directors Leslie Love and the late Sandra D. Hines; and then at numerous churches throughout the Midwest. In the Chicago area, it was directed by Tim Cross and shown at the Ice Theatre, Prairie State College, and New Life Christian Fellowship in Chicago Heights.
In the play, "Eve" tells her own story ("I wish you would remember me as more than just the woman who ate the fruit") and introduces women from the Old and New Testaments, who then tell their stories in ways that resonate with all women who may have face what they faced--from the murder of their sons to rape to simply feeling invisible...but also their triumphs as warriors, judges, businesswomen, and national leaders.
THE ABOVE EXCERPTS WERE FROM THE MARYGROVE COLLEGE PERFORMANCE IN DETROIT IN 2004 (L), DIRECTED BY SANDRA D. HINES; AND ALSO THE CHICAGO PERFORMANCE (R), DIRECTED BY TIMOTHY CROSS.
